Could the film ‘Sicario’ generate bad buzz for Juarez?
A movie coming out next month that could become a big box office hit is already creating a buzz. The movie ‘Sicario’ deals with an FBI agent asked to aid in the ongoing drug war in Cuidad Juarez.
It’s action-packed with violence and portrays the life of a assassin working for drug cartels but could the movie bring another black eye to the region?
The Hollywood film isn’t only action, crime and drama but it has big name actors like Benicio Del Toro.
Explosions, Shootouts and Juarez: The movie “Sicario,” expected to hit theaters in September will also have a star-studded cast like Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt.
and Josh Brolin.
“Well it’s action-packed so that’s the first thing that you get and then of course, the headliners, the actors, pull you in,” El Pasoan, Sandy Torres said after watching the trailer. But with the film exposing the war against drugs and cartel assassins Torres feels this movie might shine a bad light on the region.
“I’m worried that(drug violence) it’s going to be glorified,” Torres said.
A movie that might make things look worse than they are in El Paso and Juarez could be a detraction to soon-to-be visitors.
“It’s just going to impact our borderland a little bit more, bring us a little bit more negativity and that’s always a downer,” said Torres.
Torres feels viewers should take the movie with a grain of salt. After all it is entertainment.
“They should go in there with a mind of ‘OK, maybe it’s about this much true and this much Hollywood,” said Torres.
Torres said that although it might be a Hollywood exaggeration of what is really going on in Juarez narco-violence is still an important issue that needs to be recognized.
“Go see the movie but c’mon let’s see the reality behind it and let that be the conversation at the dinner table,” said Torres.
Reviews on the movie have said this is an action thriller that delivers.
Others say the thriller has a lot to say about the current U.S.-led drug war.
