Shelter feeds children, needs help
Every Saturday, missionaries from both sides of the border head to Anapra, a community outside of Cd. Juarez.
“we collect food to bring breakfast,” said Victor Barron, a volunteer at Lazos de Bondad.
Lazos de Bondad, Bonds of Kindness, is a shelter that helps more than 50 children every week.
“We learn about God and share a meal,” said Valeria Cerrillo, an 11-year-old and the oldest of four siblings who go to the shelter for breakfast every Saturday.
Although the members say they have enough food, there’s another big problem.
“The main problem here is water, there is no water to drink,” said Barron.
The shelter has no running water, and the water in the area is not fit to drink. Instead, any potable water has to be brought in, in jugs.
A young boy told ABC-7 he doesn’t have water at home, instead he and his father have to carry the water through hills to be able to drink, wash, and shower.
“All these kids need options, they need other things in their lives and if we can provide something that can be helpful and help them to grow up to be better adults, it makes the whole thing worthwhile,”
The group has set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise the money needed to buy drinkable water and carry it to the shelter. Members say if enough funds are raised, they would also start feeding children every weekday before school.
