Thousands of students head back to school in El Paso area

Today wasn’t a day for sleeping in for thousands of El Paso area students.

It’s the first day of school with some not just starting a new grade but also starting at a new school.

In Canutillo ISD, that meant the opening of Silvestre and Carolina Reyes Elementary School.

The school is named after former Congressman Silvestre Reyes and his wife.

Earlier this month, the school held its ribbon-cutting ceremony with the school’s namesakes who were born and raised in Canutillo.

It took two years and more than $24 million to build the school.

This is Canutillo ISD’s sixth elementary school and will house Pre-K through 5th grade.

It is expected to add 6th-8th grade in the coming years.

The school mascot is the Red Hawks.
