rick cabrera explains in abc-7 listens. as journalists … we all want to break the big story, get that major scoop and ideally be first on the air with breaking news. and i would say here at k-v-i-a we hold our own. but sometimes … we aren’t first. “why do you say the hithchikers found dead in white sands have not been identified? “this morning’s newspaper lists their names.” sal is referring to the horrific story involving two hikers from france who lost their lives while visiting the white sands national monument. as we’ve learned the selflessness of david and ornella steiner saved their young son’s life. as to sal’s question … we are extremely cautious when identifying people who have died, been arrested or suffered a major tragedy for obvious reasons … getting it wrong could cause incredible pain and suffering. in some cases if we can confirm the identies with the family or through sources we’ll go with it … but out of an abundance of caution and out of respect for the families … in most cases we wait for the official confirmation from law enforcement. and for the record … we were able to confirm and report the couple’s identity later that day. may they rest in peace. rick cabrera. abc-7 listens. here’s a look at news you can find online after
