as lightning struck the ground on a baseball field at the gallo t-ball grounds in las cruces. you’re looking at the mark the bolt made after hitting the ground friday night. a witness says there were about 150 people at the fields during the close call. “i was kind of amazed and thank god that my kid wasn’t hurt because he was the one out here opening the gate for everyone. lightinig especially after what happened at picachu middle school we just had to make sure that our kids were safe since he was out here and he is a little one i was kind of worried about him.” after the lighting hit – throughout the state. duran has not responded to the allegations. it’s unclear how this will affect her current position. in virginia, the community gathered to rember two journalists gunned down by a former co-worker. local praise bands performed for those who were in attendance… as a way to offer comfort and to help heal. w-d-b-j reporter alison parker and photographer adam ward were shot and killed wednesday morning while doing a live report from a shopping district. the woman they were interviewing, vicki garner, survived. the gunman, former employee vester flanagan, fled the scene and later shot himself as he was confronted by police. a child abuse trial is about to get underway for the stepfather of a 9- year-old new mexican boy who authorities say was kicked to death by his mother. stephen casaus faces charges including intentional child abuse resulting in death and tampering with evidence in the december 2013 death of omaree varela. but police and state child services were tipped off to the abuse… and didn’t help the boy. that prompted governor susana martinez to launch policy changes in how child welfare investigations are handled in the state. jury selection in casaus’ trial is scheduled for monday in albuquerque. the boy’s mother will stand trial separately. according to bloomberg, eight out of ten businesses fail in the first 18 months. but one south-el paso icon has lasted more than a lifespan. abc-7’s julio-cesar chavez takes a look at how the store has been open for so long. mariachis music, food, and prizes were all part of saturday’s festivities a small corner store. julio-cesar chavez, abc-7 socorro isd is trying to get students back where they belong–in the classroom. yesterday –the district held a phone bank to call former students who failed to return to school. this is the first part of the district’s walk for success program. administrators, teachers and volunteers called 500 students. they gave them information on how to get back to school. next month–they’ll walk door to door to encourage them to return: “we’r trying to reconnect wit these students, to let them know we miss them, we want them back, and we care about their future.” the district plans to visit students at home on september 19th. yesterday it was dog against dog in the wienerschnitzel wiener nationals. that’s when wiener dogs gathered to test their descended onto cleveland square park for the 20th annual wienerschnitzel wiener nationals — the el paso regionals. it was the first time the races have taken place in the sun city. “we have a really big marke here. we have 8 stores in town. we just opened a brand new one on montana. we wanna just bring awareness to the brand and bring this fun event to el paso.” although some owners trained their dogs days in advance, others took a lax approach. “we trained them for oh, abou 10 minutes this morning, um, in the parking lot, to see how well they would do. that’s about it, the extent of it” to go from wiener to winner, the dogs had to first get through the preliminaries. “here we go, alright, go!” som races had to have a do-over. “ge set….go!” and with the upset, bonnie takes the win in this race. adopted from a shelter just months ago, bonnie had to undergo extensive back and neck surgery. “she couldn’t even hardly wal when we got her. even at the park, she would stumble and fall over herself. now she can jump on a lawn chair. i mean she does amazing things now.” win or lose, these owners were just happy to meet others who share their love of weenie dogs. eo, abc-7. the finals were held during the chihuahuas game against the oklahoma city dodgers yesterday. the winner received $500 dollars. still ahead on the borderland’s only weekend morning newscast… marking ten years since
