Las Cruces Bulldawgs push for no contest in loss
The Las Cruces Bulldawgs took on the Montwood Rams the first week of the high school football season.
The Bulldawgs lost that game 20-14 but Head Coach Jim Miller feels that comes with a major asterisk.
The game, which started at 4 p.m., was delayed at 5:52 p.m. with 3:09 left on the clock in the third quarter due to lightning and officials waited until past 7 p.m. to resume. There were several lightning bolts that kept the game delayed.
The UIL states if there are least four different lightning strikes in one game, the contest could be called early, which is exactly what happened.
The decision was then made to call the game just and Montwood was declared the winner. Miller said they shouldn’t be given the loss especially because a game was played right after and completed to its entirety.
“I am not saying we should have played in the lightning, but we were ready to wait it out,” Miller said.
Miller is seeking a no contest ruling from the New Mexcio Activities Association to avoid taking a loss, but for the time being the rest is out of his control.
