Sentencing for Wakesha Ives postponed
A Riverside High School teacher convicted in her baby’s death will have to wait longer to learn her punishment.
Wakesha Ives’ sentencing was scheduled for Thursday, but the hearing was canceled and a new date has not been set.
A jury of eight women and four men found Ives guilty of criminal negligent homicide for leaving her 5-month-old daughter Janay in a hot car in 2013. She was found not guilty of a second charge, injury to a child by omission.
In closing arguments, the defense argued Ives truly did not know the child was in the car.
The prosecution made the case that forgetfulness was not a reason for the teacher to evade punishment.
