First Alert coverage: marble-size hail in Mesilla

ABC-7’s New Mexico Mobile Newsroom drove all around Mesilla on Wednesday and experienced just how hard the hail was coming down.

“Sounded like gunshots or rocks being thrown at the car,” one Mesilla resident said.

The hail, which hit around 1 p.m., was the size of marbles. People were so worried their cars would get dented, that many covered their hoods with cardboard.

“Fortunately we were in the building,” a Mesilla resident said. “We were just leaving a funeral, walked out to get in the car and all hail broke loose.”

ABC-7’s New Mexico Mobile Newsroom crew, along with many others, had to take cover under the 1-10 overpass on Avenida de Mesilla when the storm hit. The overpass was packed with about 20 other cars taking shelter.
