Teen allegedly involved in El Paso robberies, car chase changes plea in New Mexico case
One of the teens authorities say was involved in a high speed car chase that went from Northeast El Paso into New Mexico was back in court Friday morning.
ABC-7’s New Mexico Mobile Newsroom was in the courtroom as Edwin Rodriguez faced an Alamogordo judge.
Rodriguez and four other teens are accused of robbing four El Paso businesses before leading authorities on high speed chase that ended in New Mexico, near Alamogordo.
Rodriguez is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a stolen vehicle, tampering with evidence, and conspiracy among other charges.
Friday morning Rodriguez changed his plea from not guilty to no contest.
ABC-7 spoke with Otero County’s assistant district attorney, who explained the possible punishment he faces.
“After the final disposition, which will probably be in early December, regardless of whether the outcome is probation, or some sort of commitment here, Texas will come up for the proceedings in Texas,” said Ellen Jessen, Otero County assistant district attorney.
Rodriquez faces anywhere from two years probation to two years at a juvenile facility in New Mexico.
Rodriguez will be held in Gallup until he’s ordered to appear in court again in December.
