the care of the state. today they found found loving homes during an adoption day event. we met one woman who opened her arms and doors to four little brothers and sisters. “you know what i got this group two years ago. the arrived to my home separately, and i fell in love with twins and i wanted their siblings … we just became a family instantly.” sherry sullivan’s new family was one of seven who adopted a total of 17 children at the el paso county courthouse. we were in the courtroom as the judge made it official. lots of smiles and lots of tears. november is national adoption month. here in texas, the department of family and protective services uses it to promote adoption. here are some numbers provided by the d-f-p-s there are approximately 6,800 in foster car in texas, including 144 in el paso. in 2015 — 5,468 children were adopted — 112 of them in el paso. you need to be 21 years of age to adopt a child in texas. as part of the adoption event, the county courthouse unveiled a new mural celebrating families and adoption. the mural was painted by children in el paso’s adoption program. as you can see it’s a tree with colorful leaves made from outlines of the kids hands – and on the hands they wrote what they were thankful for! many – giving thanks to their parents, siblings! such a great piece of artwork before thanksgiving! a local program is helping high school students
