93-year-old woman shot and killed at assisted living center

An elderly woman is dead after police say she was shot and killed by her husband.

It happened Saturday night at Monte Vista at Coronado living center on the 1500 block of Belvidere Street in West El Paso.

The woman who was killed was 93 years old.

It was late afternoon when police arrived at the Monte Vista at Coronado.

Monte Vista is a senior living community center.

Police say a caretaker walked into a couples room and a 91-year-old man who lived there told the caretaker he had shot his wife.

“It was reported by the husband when the caretakers went to check on him,” said Enrique Carrillo, El Paso police spokesman.

Steven Perez’s father lives at the Monte Vista.

“I’m in shock, you’re like here?,” said Perez.

Perez tells ABC-7 he feels the senior living center is a very safe place.

“It’s a very nice place one of the top notch places,” said Perez.

Perez tells ABC-7 he doesn’t really question the security at senior living center but he does question how a 91-year-old man was in possession of a gun.

“How can you be a certain age, be 90 and operate a handgun,” Perez said.

Police tell ABC-7 the man was well aware of what was going on and he was arrested without incident.

ABC-7 called Monte Vista at Coronado and spoke with the executive director.

He told ABC-7 it was an isolated incident and nobody else was in danger.

ABC-7 asked him about their weapons policy and was told “I’ve told all I can tell you.”
