Proposed Mental Health Facility in LC

county. it was built three years ago with county money. we’re told the county is still looking for a company that would essentially run and opearate the center. it’s at motel boulevard and amador avenue, right next to the dona ana county jail the story is developing in the heart of las cruces.. .. where we also got another big development tonight on mental health care. there’s a chance a state run facility could be built in las cruces. abc-7’s jamie warren was at today’s city council meeting.. … and she’s live tonight from our new mexico mobile newsroom. jamie? todays approval sparked a long discussion among councilors here on how to best assist those with underserved mental illness issues in new mexico: gfx the city unanimously approved spending $25,000 on a feasibility study that would look into building a public hospital to treat the mentally ill here in las cruces that’s half the cost. dona ana county is funding the other half. the study has been underway since october, with the results due back on january 16th. mental health advocates at today’s council meeting expressed the need for a state run facility here in las cruces that provides long term care. ron gurley tells me his daughter is a mental health patient and he’s sees first hand just how important having the proper resources close to home are. gurley councilman jack eakman described before the council just how limited care here is. 20:41:59 ron gurley mental health advocate mental illness is the third most expensive illness in the world and we’re dead last 20:46:15 jack eakman, district 4 it actually forgive the term mom and pop operation mental health services here in southern new mexico theyre not conjoined they’re not integrated and maybe one doesn’t know what the other is doing so people fall through the cracks once the results come back, the city and county would decide if they will ask the state legislature for funding. there’s no timeline on when a state facility could be built. eakman guesses it could be years. ok, jamie live in las cruces thank you. cruces thank you. new at six tonight… have you ever thought william beaumont
