EPCC cancels classes day of pope’s visit to Juarez

El Paso Community College will cancel classes the day of Pope Francis’ visit to Ciudad Juarez on February 17th.

Thursday, the EPCC Board of Trustees voted to close all campuses, including the Administration Services Center.

The University of Texas at El Paso had already canceled classes because of the “Two Nations, One Faith” celebration at the Sun Bowl Stadium that day.

All but two of the public school districts in El Paso County have canceled classes that day.

Clint ISD is going ahead with classes while Canutillo ISD expects to make a decision during next Tuesday’s board meeting.

Board Member Adrian Medina tells ABC-7 the district is considering making students attend school on President’s Day, which falls on Monday February 15th, if it decides to give students the 17th off.

Medina said the district would lose money if students miss class the day of the pope’s visit. The district is also concerned about the cost of paying for substitutes if teachers call in.
