UTEP Announces 2016 Football Schedule

Head coach Sean Kugler announced the 2016 football schedule Thursday.

“We are excited to have four of our first six games at home, including Army which will be a great game for the El Paso community and Fort Bliss,” said Kugler.

After only playing five home games last season, the Miners are slated to have seven home games during the 2016 campaign. The team will open play on Sept. 3 versus I-10 rival NM State. UTEP will look to extend its seven-game winning streak against the Aggies.

The Miners will then travel to Longhorn nation to take on Texas on Sept. 10. This will be the fifth meeting between the teams (1930, 1933, 2008, 2009). The last meeting between the squads was held in Austin and Texas was ranked second in the nation.

The football team will then return to the Sun City to take on Army on Sept. 17. This will be the first meeting between the teams and a great opportunity for the community of El Paso and Fort Bliss to come out and support UTEP and the Black Knights.

“We will open up conference play against the top two teams in our division and will be able to have a bye week during the midpoint of the season to evaluate where we are at,” said Kugler.

The Miners are then slated to commence Conference USA play at home on Sept. 24 against conference champions Southern Miss. UTEP will have two conference shows at LA Tech (Oct. 1) and versus FIU (Oct. 8) before entering its bye week (Oct. 15).

They then will travel to San Antonio to take on the Roadrunners on Oct. 29. The last time the Miners played at the Alamodome, the defense shutout UTSA, 34-0. UTEP will then have back-to-back home games battling it out against conference foe Old Dominion (Oct. 29) and Houston Baptist (Nov. 5). This will be the first meeting between the Huskies and the Miners.

UTEP will then hit the road to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on Florida Atlantic (Nov. 12) and then travel to Houston for its 19th meeting versus Rice (Nov. 19).

The Miners will conclude the season at home on Nov. 26 to battle it out against North Texas.
