Suspects surrender in deadly beating outside Central El Paso bar

Two men accused of brutally beating a man who later died turned themselves in, police said.

Arturo Martinez, 49, and his girlfriend had been at the El Patron Sports Bar at 5622 E. Paisano for a short time Jan. 22 when they were approached by 37-year-old Raul Ruiz, 42-year-old Adrian Chavez and another man.

And argument broke out before Martinez was pushed to the ground and then dragged outside, police said.

Once in the parking lot, police said, Ruiz pushed Martinez, causing him to hit his head on the asphalt. Chavez allegedly continued beating Martinez as he lay on the ground.

Martinez died Jan. 28.

The third man was involved in the initial verbal altercation, but police said he did not physically assault Martinez.

Ruiz, an El Paso firefighter who was off-duty at the time of the alleged beating, and Chavez turned themselves into police headquarters on Friday. They are charged with manslaughter and were booked into the El Paso County Jail with bond set at $75,000.
