Construction crane tips over outside Speaking Rock

It was a terrifying moment for construction crews in El Paso’s Lower Valley Tuesday.

A large crane tipped over while lifting a large concrete wall.

The crane collapsed next to the Speaking Rock Entertainment Center off of Socorro Road and Gonzales Street.

Speaking Rock management told ABC-7 at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning the crane tipped over.

Crews were putting up a massive concrete wall for a Speaking Rock expansion project.

The crane not only tipped over but the wall came crashing down.

The 80-ton crane was appeared as if it was suspended in mid-air.

Speaking Rock management says the driver who was in the crane at the time is doing OK and no one else was hurt.

Socorro Road and Gonzales Street were closed off.

Heavy equipment and two cranes were rushed in to get the crane upright.

ABC-7 also saw El Paso Electric crews shutting down power in the area to keep workers safe.

Six hours later crews were still cleaning up the mess breaking up the massive wall that fell on the street.

It took crews seven hours to get the crane upright, the roads re-opened and power restored.

A Speaking Rock official said the expansion project which will be a new venue for concerts is still expected to be open in about three months.
