Candidates file for 2016 primary election in Doa Ana County

It was a busy day at the Doa Ana County Treasurer’s Office, as dozens filed for candidacy in the 2016 election.

On Tuesday, everyone crowded into the treasurer’s office as candidates drew cards to find out the order they’d appear on the ballot.

There are about a dozen positions up for grabs. They include state representatives and senators, and county commissioners.

Here are some of the races to watch:

Republican incumbent Andy Nunez will go against former city councilor Nathan Small in the general election.

To replace embattled County Treasurer David Gutierrez, some of his employees are lining up.

Chief Deputy Treasurer Eric Rodriguez will face Shannon Reynolds and former mayoral candidate Gina Montoya-Ortega.

The winner will face former chief deputy treasurer Jill Johnson in November.

In the race for district attorney, incumbent Mark D’antonio and James A. Dickens will face off in the democratic primary, then go up against republican Lane Brad Cates.

Three out of the five seats in the county commission are up for election.

Incumbents David Garcia and Wayne Hancock signed up to defend their seats. Leticia Benavidez has termed out.

The primary election is June 7; early voting begins May 10.
