the news you need to start your sunday, march 13th. abc-7’s “good morning el paso weekend” starts right now! good morning and thank you for joing us… i’m andrew j. polk. a welfare check turned into a murder investigation in montana vista. one woman is dead while the suspect — her husband — is in the hospital. it happened around nine yesterday morning. deputies were called out to the 38-hundred block of vander veer. that’s when they found the couple inside the home with gunshot wounds. we spoke to a neighbor who didn’t want to speak on camera… she says the couple was married but had problems in the past. she claims the man had threatened to burn down the home in the past and had been arrested. the woman told us she hadn’t seen him since until last night when she saw him drinking and listening to loud music. later, when the wife got home early that morning, he allegedly shot and killed her. police say the man also tried to kill himself… he’s in the hospital with critical injuries. the second escaped fugitive out of albuquerque has been captured. police say inmates lionel clah and joseph cruz slipped away from prison guards wednesday night while traveling between roswell and las cruces. now they’re reporting that clah surrendered peacefully – after being found inside an albuquerque apartment. authorities say a woman who had lived in the apartment tipped them off – their relation in unknown. clah was taken to the new mexico state police albuquerque office for questioning. state police and the u.s. marshals service captured convicted murder joseph cruz friday in albuquerque. now to a quick look at men’s basketball… new mexico state was just one win away from making it to the ncaa tournament. it all came down to one shot. let’s take a look. it was nmsu versus cal state bakersfield last night with the two tie-ing late in the second half. but that’s when this happened… dedrick basil crossed over nmsu’s pascal siakam and makes the basket just in time for the buzzer. bakersfield wins 57 to 54. they advance to the n-c-a-a tournament for the first time in history — nmsu now hoping to get into the n-i-t. we’ll have more highlights from the game coming up in temperatures will run 5 to 8 degrees warmer than average. skies will be predominantlyclear with just some passing high clouds. winds will be breezy today …a bit windy on monday… and the lighter for the rest of the week. more protesters came out to trump rallies yesterday — this time in kansas city. police reportedly had to use pepper spray to control the crowd outside. the incident came after a man tried to jump on stage during another trump rally in dayton, ohio yesterday. but the secret service stopped the jumper and he’s now facing disorderly conduct charges. during his speech in kansas city, trump called on all protesters at his rallies to be arrested. the department said on twitter that officers used pepper spray twice and that two people were arrested. ted cruz has picked up most delegates awarded in yesterday’s g-o-p conventions in wyoming. cruz won nine of the 12 delegates selected in county conventions there. donald trump and marco rubio added one delegate each, while the 12-th delegate is uncommitted. but republicans in wyoming are not done voting for the party nominee yet. another 14- delegates will be awarded at the state convention on april 16-th. then marco rubio won the republican presidential caucuses in washington d.c. rubio edged out john kasich. the district’s republican party says he picked up ten of the 19 available delegates. kasich received the other nine. none of the other candidates in the race won enough votes to earn any delegates. let’s take a quick look at the republican candidates are doing. trump still leading the race for delegates with 460. cruz is second with 367 delegates. rubio has 153… and john kasich 54. rember, it takes 1-thousand- 2-hundred-3 7 delegates to win the republican nomination for president. then hillary clinton won the democratic caucuses in the northrn mariana islands. final results from the party show… clinton picked up four delegates from the u-s territory, while bernie sanders added two. that was clinton’s 14-th victory in the nomination race, compared to nine wins for sanders. clinton also has the support of an unpledged superdelegate from there. yesterday’s caucuses were the first ones ever held in the northern mariana islands. meanwhile sanders is trying to rally his supporters to go out and vote. speaking at an event in champaign he said his campaign does best when people show up to cast their ballots. so he’s asking illinois voters to come out in record numbers to see the state have it’s largest turnout in history. sanders is still trailing clinton in the delegate race. so far clinton has 1-thousand- 2hundred-31 delegates while sanders has 576. it takes 2-thousand- 3hundred-83 to win the nomination. experts are modifying mosquitos in hopes they’ll help stem the tide against the zika virus. the f-d-a is moving ahead with an experiment intended to help control the mosquitos that spread the virus. scientists want to create a line of genetically modified mosquitos that die before they can bite anyone. it’s a technique that’s already being used in brazil… and it’s brought the number of mosquitos way down. the technique still has controversy. critics worry that messing with genetics may not be safe. the f-d-a now asking for the public to weigh in on the matter. yesterday was the first day of the 16th annual home and garden show. if you’re planning on a major do-it-yourself project or you need a little help–you might want to head over to the convention center — today is your last chance.. it’s hosted by the el paso association of builders, and its a chance to get those creative juices flowing. everything from tile work, landscaping, pools, windows, doors is available, and there’s also some previews of what to expect in this years parade of homes. organizers encourage everyone to go and take a look, even if you might be on a tight budget: “well you know come take a look a lot of our folks that are here will offer you great financing or they have the sources for that, and they’ll also work with you, it’s not because there’s a certain price to it, you got to take a look and say like ok can i work a deal? come work a deal, that’s what its about, let’s do some business.” today is the last day of the event, it starts at 11 a-m and will end at 5 p-m. the cielo vista mall is inviting children with special needs to meet the easter bunny today. starting at 10 this morning, families can come down for a special photo opportunity with the easter bunny. the event is expected to last until 11-30 in jcpenney court… and promises there will be no lines, no crowds, no music… just lots of fun. it’s set up to support the sensory, physical, and other developmental needs of kids with all abilities. again, that’s at the cielo vista mal from 10 to 11-30 this morning. delphi automotive will be in el paso this week. the company is an international company that makes high-tech components for cars. they are looking for local companies to do business with, holding two “matchmaking” events. the firs will be on wednesday in el paso from 1 to 6 p-m at the marriott on airway and the second will be thursday from 9 a-m to 2 p-m at the delphi’s district center in juarez. pre-registration ended but local and small businesses will still be able to sign up for the event until wednesday. don’t forget to pick up this week’s issue of the el paso
