Police identify 79-year-old hit by CAD employee in pedestrian crash

Update: El Paso Police have identified the man injured in a pedestrian crash Wednesday afternoon. This happened around 2:45 p.m. on the 100 block of Mills in downtown El Paso.

Police said a 2007 Ford Taurus driven by 48-year-old Gabriel Solis was traveling west on Mills attempting a southbound turn onto Mesa. Solis is an employee with the Central Appraisal District. The vehicle belongs to CAD also.

Police said Solis failed to yield the right of way and struck a 79-year-old man in a wheelchair at the cross-walk with the walk sign activated.

The pedestrian, Jesus Hernandez Pallares, sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to University Medical Center.

ABC-7 has reached out to CAD for comment, but has yet to hear back.

Original: One person was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon following a pedestrian crash. This happened around 2:45 p.m. on Mesa at Mills in downtown El Paso.

According to a Fire Dispatch supervisor, the victim was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Special Traffic Investigators were called to assist El Paso Police in the investigation.

An ABC-7 photographer on scene said the vehicle involved in the crash had the logo for the Central Appraisal District. A wheelchair was also observed being involved in the crash.

Diana Barragan, a witness, told ABC-7 she was stopped at the stoplight when she saw the crash. She said the car was turning left when it crashed into an elderly man in a wheelchair. “He flew out of the wheelchair. He hit his head on the car and on the pavement,” said Barragan.

“The guy was careless enough to not look to the other side to see if the guy was there….He was, I guess, distracted.”

No other information was available at the time.
