Accused murderer back in custody after being released on bond
The man who allegedly admitted to murdering two people last year is back in custody.
Last week, Terrick Thompkins was released on a $240,000 bond. He’s facing several charges, including two counts of First-Degree Felony Murder.
In March 2015, Thompkins called 911 and allegedly confessed to killing the mother of his children. Thompkins is also accused of shooting a 13-year-old boy, who survived.
Prosecutors argued Thompkins has a violent past and the likelihood he could commit more crimes based on his mental state and criminal history is high.
The district attorney’s office filed an emergency motion asking Judge Jerry Ritter to order the immediate arrest of Thompkins. Ritter granted the request, arguing Thompkins should not have been released in the first place.
“He does not have the same constitutional right to bail someone would have if they were not charged with capital offenses,” Ritter said.
“From the day Terrick was charged that’s when the DA should have said, ‘look, judge, he’s not bailable. That’s a capital offense.’ But to do it after he bonds out, it just shocks me to the core,” Thompkin’s defense attorney Todd Holmes said.
Holmes said he will appeal the judge’s decision. Thompkins has a competency hearing scheduled in June.
