Update on El Paso man who made medical history

El Pasoan Reggie Cook, the first ever elbow-to-elbow transplant recipient, can now reportedly feed himself. The San Francisco Chronicle gave an update on Cook in an article published Saturday.

Cook underwent the pioneering surgery last month, all in the name of regaining some mobility he lost in a car crash seven years ago. Cook had surgeons cut off his left arm to used the elbow on the right arm.

A team of orthopedic, vascular, and plastic surgeons removed his left arm – which was flaccid – and transplanted a flap that includes the elbow, ligaments, veins, and blood vessels on his right arm.

Doctors performed the surgery at the University of California San Francisco.
