Probation hearing for former boxer Antonio Escalante postponed

Antonio Escalante will be behind bars for at least two more weeks after his court hearing was reset until June 8.

Escalante was scheduled to appear at the El Paso County Courthouse Thursday morning. ABC-7 learned that won’t happen until early June because Escalante’s new attorney asked for more time to review the case.

The El Paso County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Escalante has a new attorney for the case, but couldn’t tell ABC-7 why.

The featherweight was arrested multiple times for DWI. He was arrested in April for allegedly violating his probation from his original DWI sentence.

Former professional boxer, Herman Delgado, said it’s an unfortunate situation to continue to hear about.

“It’s just sad to see that he’s getting that, nobody is putting a stop to it,” Delgado said. “I mean he has to take responsibility for this and obviously he’s not so I have no sympathy for that.”

According to court records, Escalante’s Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) was greater than or equal to .15 when he was arrested at on the most recent DWI charge at 4:07 p.m. July 13, 2014 at 800 N. Piedras for DWI.

Escalante will remain in jail until the hearing.
