6 killed, dozens wounded over bloody holiday weekend in Chicago
Chicago rung in the unofficial start to summer with dozens of shootings that killed six people and wounded 56 others over Memorial Day weekend.
The police department reported Tuesday that there were 48 shooting incidents in the city from 5 p.m. Friday through midnight on Monday.
That’s the same number of shootings and wounded people as last year’s Memorial Day weekend, but fewer than half of that holiday weekend’s 14 fatal shootings.
Chicago’s overall homicide rate is much higher, with 242 already registered for 2016, compared to 160 over the same period of 2015.
