Tai Chan Murder Trial
was the question posed by the defense today during tai chan’s murder trial. you’ll rember chan is charged with first degree murder. prosecutors say the former santa fe deputy shot and killed his partner jeremy martin. the two were staying in las cruces after taking a prisoner to arizona the trial is in its second week… and it’s playing out inside the dona ana county district court in downtown las cruces. that’s where abc-seven’s jamie warren spent the day listening to more witness testimony. she is live with our new mexico mobile newsroom tonight… rick and estela, the state hasn’t rested. but because of a scheduling conflict, the defense had an opportunity to call a witness to the stand here today the prosecution says martin was shot 5 times in the back. but clinical psychologist dr philip trompetter testified officers are trained to react quickly. he said there’s a possibly martin turned his body during the gun fire, striking him in the back. the prosecution said trompetters statements were generalized. they pointed out trompetter had little experience with cases where an officer shoots a fellow officer. sot dr. philip trompetter clinical psychologist 22:22:38 officers will typically will continue to fire at least one round sometimes two or more because it just takes that long once you’ve started an action of firing every quarter of a second to stop that action so frequently you’ll get additional shots fired because that’s just the way the human body responds another witness called by the defense testified chan had a .24% alcohol content the night of the shooting, 3 times the legal limit…. live from dona ana county district court with our nmmn jamie warren abc7 and we’re back in
