Local swimmers hope to qualify for Olympics at U.S. trials
EL PASO, Texas – Four local swimmers will test their luck and skill at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, beginning Sunday, June 26.
The four swimmers are:
Will Licon: Licon grew up in El Paso before going to college at the University of Texas. At Texas, Licon became a Big 12 and national champion. He competed at the 2012 trials but did not get a spot on the Olympic squad. He will be swimming in three events during this year’s trials – the 100 breast, 200 breast, and 200 IM.
Sean Grieshop: Like Licon, Grieshop is an El Paso native who made the move to Austin. However, Grieshop is only 17 years old. His family sacrificed a lot so he could train in Austin with some of the world’s top swimmers. He will be competing in seven events – the 400 IM, 400 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 200 IM, 200 butterfly, and the 1500 (or mile) race. He was a member of the U.S. Junior National squad.
Kelley Conrad: Conrad swam for the NMSU Aggies from 2007 to 2011. She will be competing in the 50-meter freestyle race on July 2. Conrad is now a swimming instructor in Scottsdale. She qualified for the Olympic trials at the club where she teaches, swimming the 50 meters in 26.11 seconds, 0.08 seconds under the qualifying time.
Jordan Ehly: Ehly attended Mayfield High School in Las Cruces before becoming a Nebraska Cornhusker. She is a breaststroke specialist who is expected to compete in the 100 and 200 breaststroke races. She also made it onto the Academic All Big Ten team in 2016.
The trials will run from June 26 through July 3 in Omaha, Nebraska. You can watch qualifying heat races on NBC Sports Network and the finals on NBC. The events will also stream in full on NBCSports.com/Live. For a full schedule of times click here.
