a gun on utep’s campus. that’s when the campus carry law goes into effect. the law allows concealed handguns to be carried at all public texas univiersities: abc-7’s jamie warren joins us live with the details a lot of people i spoke with on utep’s campus today were caught by surprise. they had no idea that starting tomorrow some students inside their classroom will be allowed to carry handguns. 16-23 1:04-1:11 “that’s crazy “i think it’s a good thing we’v had a lot of bad people in this country doing crazy things” despite the protests- concealed carry is coming to utep. people we spoke with on campus had different opinions about the law “the students need to b protected” “that’s not safe for th students that are around here” “if at any time a gun a handgun a weapon of any kind if exposed on the campus or used in a threatening manner that’s a violation of not only campus policy but the law” dr. gar edens with student affairs says he doesn’t anticipate the atmosphere on campus to change 1:17;17 the law is for concealed carry holders so the reality is you’re not supposed to know who has a concealed carry or who doesn’t. we’ve put in place i think a number of policies that will keep this campus safe there are places students cannot bring handguns, like the student health center, campus housing where students share a space like miner heights. and special events like at the sunbowl and don haskins center. gfx other areas include laboratories like the biology building testing centers where national tests, like the s-a-t-s, are taking place and properties owned or leased by the university like the utep graduate busiess center the law does not require utep to provide any storage facilities or lockers to place your handgun inside. which will send a lot of people, back to their cars “if they bring a gun to campus and they’re planning to go in one of the exclusion zones they’ll have to go back to their private automobile and have those safely secured” ” think it’s only dangerous if someone’s showing it” “we’ll s what happens, though. maybe it is for the better” to get a concealed carry license in texas you must be at least 21, 18 if you’re a veteran, and you must pass training courses. there are also restrictions on people convicted or felonies or known to suffer from mental illness. we have a link with the full list of restricted places to carry on campus at kvia.com.
