115 acres donated to San Elizario

The city of San Elizario, not quite three years old, is growing after a land donation of 115 acres.

Maureen Ponce Singleton, the former owner of Valley Feed Mills in San Eli, is behind the donation.

She attended a ceremony held Wednesday on the land, where she received a plaque and key to the city.

“Some of the possibilities for this land — and this space — is creating a community center,” San Elizario Mayor Maya Sanchez told ABC-7. “(We could) potentially (establish) city offices here, something that would benefit the public.”

While city officials have plans for the property, it will continue to be run as a farm. The land is used to grow alfalfa and cotton, among other crops.

Also on the property is a farmhouse that’s estimated to be nearly 100 years old.
