UPDATE: Man struck by Sun Metro Mesa Brio dies
The man who was hit by a Sun Metro Brio jumped in front of the bus as it approached, police said.
Jon Wortner, 34, died from his injuries on Thursday, police said.
The ABC-7 I-Team learned that Wortner had pleaded guilty to a charged of driving while intoxicated on Wednesday morning. As part of the plea agreement, a one-year jail sentence was suspended, and Wortner was sentenced to 16 months of probation and 80 hours of community service.
The crash happened in the northbound lanes of the 4600 block of North Mesa Street. The crash prompted police to close the northbound lanes between from Executive to Castellano Drive. Cones were set up on one of the southbound lanes, which was used for northbound traffic.
Police urged drivers to avoid the area. Traffic heading north was backed up to Mesita Elementary School about 3:30 Wednesday.
Drivers along Mesa Street found themselves stuck in traffic for hours. Dominic Pierce and her passengers sat in their car for three hours.
“I live on the East Side and I have been in this traffic since like 5:30 p.m. I have been here since 5:30 p.m. and I still have not reached my destination. I don’t even live on this side and I still have to get back home,” Pierce said.
