EPISD continues to sell $669 million bond; some parents not getting the message

The El Paso Independent School District continues the push for what would be a record-breaking bond proposal, but some say they’re not getting the message.

The $669 million bond for El Paso’s largest school district is the focus of a big education campaign by district leaders. ABC-7 learned there are some, at campuses that would be directly impacted by the bond, who don’t know what’s going on.

Some parents were very clued in, while others at Lincoln Middle School in the upper valley didn’t know about the bond. ABC-7 has gotten complaints that there isn’t enough information being circulated about the consolidation coming for Lincoln along with Mitzi Bond and Roberts Elementary schools.

There have been some visible signs of an increasing outreach for education about the bond project. Detailed signs have been getting placed on campuses, like in front of the Franklin High School 9th Grade Center on the westside, showing what’s in the bond and how it would affect particular campuses.

“Lincoln Middle School, Bond and Roberts Elementary Schools are proposed for consolidation,” EPISD Spokeswoman Melissa Martinez said. “So they were proposed for consolidation to become a pre-K through 8 school. So they would consolidate at the Lincoln campus. It would be a new school, those three schools combining into one to create a pre-K through 8.”

Martinez and other district staff have been organizing or assisting with many information sessions like one at Franklin Tuesday afternoon where people are free to ask any questions about the bond and next steps if approved by voters in November. She added that the Lincoln consolidation won’t affect the feeder pattern for those students, but to reach out or go to the meetings if you have any questions.

“All of the principals as well have information so feel free to contact your principal,” Martinez said. “They can tell you about the projects proposed for their campus. Or please call us as the district. We’re happy to answer any questions.”

There will also be a Lincoln consolidation-specific meeting at Lincoln Middle on Oct. 26.
