Funding for speed humps on 22 streets approved
The City Streets and Maintenance Department Tuesday requested $331,200 from City Council to fund speed humps for 22 streets.
In 2008, the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP) was set up to allow residents to request speed humps, and other traffic calming measures in their neighborhoods. NTMP has been so successful that funds for the program have temporarily run out, city officials said.
The waiting list of already approved projects now stands at 22, and some of those projects have been on the list since the programs inception in 2008.
Residents Tuesday pleaded with Council to approve the request. “It is by pure luck that someone has not been seriously injured or killed on our street,” said one El Paso resident who’s street is on the list.
“We have been waiting for year, we are desperate,” another resident said, “I encourage you to please take action now.”
Council listened to the pleads of residents and approved funding for the projects. No dates have been set for the speed humps to be installed, but the projects are already approved.
The 22 streets to get speed bumps are as follows.
