Surveillance cameras now operational in Union Plaza, San Jacinto Plaza area
The City of El Paso’s Entertainment District is now currently equipped with 24 cameras to help police monitor the area, EPPD officials announced Tuesday.
Additionally, the area around San Jacinto Plaza is now equipped with 18 cameras and the star on the mountain has eight cameras. Police recently arrested a group of teens who allegedly vandalized the star’s lights.
EPPD began the testing phase of the fifty cameras for the City Watch Program in early September. Last week, the system was deemed “fully functional and operational,” police said.
Police said two groups of people got into a fight in the Union Plaza District shortly before midnight September 23, 2016. During the fight, 19-year-old Dante Naken Dewayne Long, a Fort Bliss soldier, was stabbed on the 100 block of South Anthony. EMS crews rushed him to UMC where he died.
People who visit the entertainment district will be notified about the camera monitoring system via metal signs.
The cameras, which only record in public areas, can record 24 hours a day and can be monitored by police staff assigned to the Department’s Fusion Center.
