Football turf at Eastwood High vandalized overnight
The artificial football turf at Eastwood High School was vandalized overnight.
A phallic image was spray-painted near the Eastwood Trooper image in the middle of the field. A large “F” was also spray-painted near the mascot logo.
The school has since erased the images. A student posted a photo of a school employee cleaning the vandalism with the phrase “Eastwood’s Hero.”
Ysleta ISD Associate Superintendent Pat O’Neill told ABC-7 the turf, installed in August 2016, was vandalized at about 1 a.m. Friday.
“This is our brand new turf and we are disappointed some individuals would do something like this,” O’Neill said, “It’s one of the finest fields made. They’re very expensive.”
O’Neill said students helped wipe away the paint with soap and water. “When the kids came up and saw that somebody had done that to the field, we had a good 30, 40 kids on their hands and knees helping get rid of the paint,” he said.
During lunch break students sounded off.
“There was no need for that, we shouldn’t have to do those things to each other,” Tess Covey said.
The associate superintendent said the school does have security cameras at the field. When asked if the perpetrators were caught on camera, O’Neill would only say, “We are investigating and we have contacted El Paso Police.”
Students like Evan Gonzales believe there should be swift punishment.
“I think whoever did this should be fined, they are trespassing onto private property,” Gonzales said.
