EPISD superintendent a finalist for national education award
The superintendent of the El Paso Independent School District is one of nine finalists for a national education award.
Juan Cabrera is a finalist for the Green-Garner Award, which is awarded to a large urban school superintendent or school board member every other year. The award is presented by the Council of Great City Schools.
Cabrera is the lone finalist from Texas who is up for this award. He was awarded the Texas Latino Superintendent of the Year in 2015.
“We are fortunate to have a dynamic and compassionate superintendent such as Juan Cabrera, who is willing to roll up his sleeves and work on behalf of every student, regardless of the ZIP code in which he or she lives,” said EPISD Board President Dori Fenenbock said in a news release. “His leadership has created a culture where whole-child growth and development are the focus for every employee in the District.”
The winner will receive $10,000 in the form of a scholarship for a student of his or her choice. The winner of the award will be announced on Thursday evening in Miami.
In the interest of full disclosure, Superintendent Cabrera is the brother of ABC-7 Anchor Rick Cabrera.
