Franklin and Montwood get big wins Thursday night
Montwood 37 Pebble Hills 20 – Final (at the SAC)
Pebble Hills showed it wasn’t afraid of the Rams early and often, pulling off a fake punt in the first quarter that set up the team’s first touchdown of the game. The Spartans even held a 14-7 lead at the half before Montwood got things going on the offensive side of the ball in the second half. Montwood has still only lost one game in 1-6A district play this season – good enough for second place behind Americas, which has a tough test against El Dorado on Friday. Evan De Anda had two big touchdown runs in the second half to preserve the win for the Rams on senior night.
Franklin 40 Coronado 16 – Final (at the Sun Bowl)
The Cougars and Thunderbirds renewed their rivalry at the Sun Bowl on Thursday, but Franklin took the intrigue out of the game early, jumping out to a 19-2 lead and never looking back. Eric Phillips paced the Cougars, scoring two touchdowns in the first half. Franklin QB Kaleb Hatch was also steady, connecting on two touchdown passes early in the game to put the Cougars in front. Franklin entered the night just one game ahead of Eastwood for the fourth playoff spot out of 1-6A. However, Franklin still has a tough test at Americas to finish out the regular season.
