Pence’s visit, which comes less than a week before Election Day, has many in Las Cruces preparing at the last minute. It was a busy day at the Dona Ana County Republican headquarters, as people there were reserving their tickets online. Others were coming in, wanting to pick up presidential campaign signs.
Victor Contreras, with the Dona Ana Republican Party, tells ABC-7 he believes New Mexico has a chance to turn red.
“Especially in New Mexico, that’s why they’re visiting us because we’re the swing state,” he said.
However, at the democratic headquarters, leaders are confident the state will remain blue.
“We’re really excited,” Joni Gutierrez, who’s on the N.M. Democratic National Committee said. “We’re working the ballot we’re working the Hatch Valley, we’re just going forward and getting our vote out. I do not see the republicans winning this state.”
No matter what side of the political spectrum you’re on, vandalism on campaign signs has been plaguing the city.
On Tuesday, ABC-7 saw a Trump sign with a swastika on it. Another Trump billboard on the north side of the city is splattered with paint.
“We thought about replacing them and we said, no, you know what, leave it,” Contreras said. “Let people see what the other side is doing.”
Democratic leaders say they’ve also seen their fair share of vandalism and signs being stolen.
“We don’t encourage that at all. We think that’s just ridiculously awful and we hope nobody else does that,” Gutierrez said.
Las Cruces Police say if you see a sign that has been vandalized, call police right away. Don’t take it down, or tamper with it. Police say they’re aware of the vandalism on the billboard, but so far no charges have been filed.
