Police investigate officer-involved shooting
Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting Saturday night in south central El Paso.
It happened a little after 1:00 p.m. at the 100 block of South Glenwood Street.
Police have confirmed a man was shot after a responding officer and a man got into an altercation.
Police tell ABC-7 the man involved in the shooting is in stable condition and the family of the man still has a lot of questions that remained unanswered.
“At 1:28 this afternoon we received a 911 call,” said El Paso police spokesman Sgt. Robert Gomez.
Police said the call was in regards to a suicidal subject.
“A solo officer arrived at the scene and met with the subject,” Gomez said.
Officials said the man was armed with a weapon.
“He was armed with a knife and confronted the officer,” Gomez said.
Gomez said when a scuffle ensued the officer pulled out his firearm.
“Shots were fired by the officer and the subject was hit an unknown number of times,” Gomez said.
Family members rushed to the scene once they heard the news, but didn’t get many answers.
“We went to the hospital and they didn’t tell us where he was at,” Sylvia Romero said.
Romero tells ABC-7 her nephew Frank Ramirez, a man in his 30s was shot by police.
Other relatives, like Desiree Acevedo, said they were frustrated they weren’t informed about Ramirez’s condition or what exactly happened.
“What makes me mad is not really knowing what’s going on,” Acevedo said.
Although police wouldn’t specify how many times the man was shot, other family members that were in the home at the time say he was shot five times.
They say they’re frustrated with how the officer responded.
“I didn’t think that they would have to shoot him,” Acevedo said.
“They should of tased him..not shot him five times,” Romero added.
Police did not confirm the man that was shot was Frank Ramirez or if the man was shot five times.
The Crimes Against Persons unit, the El Paso police shooting review team and the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave as is customary in these incidents.
