Blind Las Cruces dog hopes to find forever home across country

A blind dog in Las Cruces is being shipped more than 2,000 miles across the country in hopes of finding a “forever home.”

Abe “Blinkon”, as he’s called, has a genetic defect and was born without eyes.

He was found by animal control darting in and out of traffic, even running into a mail box because he couldn’t see.

On Thursday, the Mesilla Valley Animal Services Center will drive Blinkon and 29 other animals across the country to New Jersey, where they’ll stay at a rescue until they can find a home.

Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock, the director of the animal services center, said finding a home for animals with disabilities in Las Cruces is a challenge.

“It’s a huge responsibility and animals are not viewed as being a close part of the household in Dona Ana County as they are in other areas of the country,” she said. “So to ask someone to take on that disability is huge and we’re just not finding it here.”

Vesco-Mock said the cross country trip will cost in between two and three thousand dollars. The money will come from the Mesilla Valley Animal Service’s annual budget, which is funded by the city and county.

“It’s to save lives and that’s what it’s all about,” Vesco-Mock said.
