McDonald’s Classic Day One: UNC’s Roy Williams makes appearance, Vargas wins 400th game
The McDonald’s Classic Basketball Tournament is underway once again this season, and day one did not disappoint hoops fans.
The tournament, which attracts both local schools and powerhouse teams from out-of-the-area, got a surprise visit from North Carolina head coach Roy Williams.
Williams stunned fans when he appeared at Eastwood High School for the Victory Prep (Houston) vs. Balboa City (San Diego) game to scout Victory Prep’s Jarred Vanderbilt, a highly-touted 6’8″ prospect.
Williams was gracious enough to take pictures with a host of fans at Eastwood, including Eastwood head football coach Julio Lopez.
In a testament to the strength of the teams in the tournament, Vanderbilt’s Victory Prep squad was blown out by Balboa City by a final of 80-47 (full scoreboard from Thursday is below this article).
But Williams wasn’t the only great coach to make an appearance at the McDonald’s Classic Thursday.
Eastwood girls coach Endi Vargas led her squad in day one action against Westchester High School out of Los Angeles.
Vargas entered the day one win shy of 400 in her career, and her Troopers team managed to help her reach that milestone as they knocked off Westchester 47 to 39. The Troopers improved to 11-2 on the season.
Tournament play continues Friday with playoff and championship action on Saturday at Eastwood High School.
