What a load of bologna! CBP officials seize 130+ pounds of meat
U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents working at the El Paso port of entry seized 12 rolls of Mexican bologna Tuesday, said officials Thursday.
The weight of the meat was 132 pounds. The bologna is banned because it has the potential for introducing foreign animal diseases to the U.S. pork industry.
The seizure was made Tuesday morning around 8:30 at the Ysleta international crossing.
The driver of a Chevrolet Silverado at first did not declare any agriculture products, said CBP officials.
However, during a secondary exam, the driver changed his declaration and told CBP agriculture specialists that he had multiple rolls of bologna in the truck.
CBP agriculture specialists seized the contraband meat, and then incinerated the product.
The driver, a Mexican male, was processed for an expedited removal and returned to Mexico.
The seizure is nothing compared to the one made in November of 2003. That’s when 81 rolls of bologna weighing 756 pounds were seized at the El Paso port of entry.
