Christmas lights cause Northeast El Paso fire

An electrical outlet overloaded with Christmas lights caused a fire in Northeast El Paso, according to officials.

It happened before 6 P.M on the 4800 block of Junction Ave. When fire crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the side of the home.

Firefighters then began to search for people inside, but residents had self-evacuated. No injuries were reported, but a woman in her mid-60’s was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Damage to the home is estimated at $50,000. Fire officials say an electrical outlet inside the home’s living room was overloaded with Christmas lights, causing the fire.

The El Paso Fire Department urges the public to purchase fire extinguishers, have a fire escape plan and working smoke alarms.
