NMSU women’s basketball tops UTEP at Haskins Center Thursday night

The Don Haskins Center is the home floor of the UTEP Miners, but this week, it’s felt like the home of the New Mexico State Aggies.

The NMSU women’s team (7-3) completed the sweep of the Miners Thursday night with a 67-59 victory after the men’s team won 79-68 on Tuesday.

The Aggie women snapped a five-game losing streak to the Miners with the win. They’ve now won five of their last six games while UTEP (2-7) has dropped five of its last six.

NMSU jumped out to a three-point half time lead but was able to use a 17-7 third quarter to open the game up and take a 13-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Tamera William led the Aggies with 16 points while Moriah Mack added 15. No other Aggie scored in double figures, but seven players had at least six points. William also added 15 rebounds in her double-double performance.

UTEP was paced by Najala Howell, who scored 13 points and added five rebounds and four assists.

It was a disappointing night for the Miners, especially since they unveiled their Conference USA regular season championship banner from the previous season – a season in which the Miners surpassed the 30-win mark.

The Miners will play Pittsburgh on Dec. 19, while the Aggies will next play Quinnipiac that same day.

The UTEP and NMSU women do not meet again the rest of the season.
