Former UTEP offensive lineman dies of heart attack at age 27

Former UTEP offensive lineman James Martin died New Year’s Day after suffering a heart attack, according to his wife.

Martin played for the Miners in 2011 and 2012, starting at tackle in five games. Martin also won a California state championship in junior college with Mount San Antonio.

His teammates knew him as “Big Frosty.”

Martin’s wife, Laura Macauley, a former track and field athlete with UTEP, posted on Facebook that Martin was rushed to the hospital early in the morning on New Year’s Day after suffering a heart attack, but doctors were unable to save him.

UTEP tweeted out the following message after learning of Martin’s passing. “Our condolences. Once a Miner, always a Miner.”

Martin was 27 years old.
