Police identify 4-year-old girl seriously injured in Far East collision

Police said the four-year-old girl seriously injured in a collision involving three vehicles Monday night is Emily Marquez.

The crash happened near Loop 375 and Vista Del Sol in Far East El Paso at 8:18 p.m.

Police say a preliminary investigation revealed a 1997 Honda Civic was being driven by 22-year-old Gabriel Marquez, with Emily as his passenger.

Directly behind Marquez was a 2015 Ford Mustang operated by 24-year-old Uriel Suarez, police said, adding that directly behind Suarez, was a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche operated by 30-year-old Claudia Valenzuela.

Traffic slowed suddenly as a result of a road closure, which forced Suarez to apply his brakes aggressively and take evasive action to avoid striking the 1997 Honda Civic. This resulted in Suarez’s vehicle entering the right emergency lane, police said.

Valenzuela also applied her brakes, but was unable to avoid striking the rear of the 1997 Honda Civic, causing a chain reaction that pushed the Honda into the Ford Mustang, police said.

The resulting collision resulted in Emily Marquez sustaining serious injuries. The girl was rushed to University Medical Center.

Police said no charges have been filed and the investigation continues.
