NMSU suffers first home loss of season against Utah Valley
The New Mexico State Aggies are usually very good at home, but were far from it Thursday night in a stunning 84-72 defeat at the hands of Utah Valley.
The Aggies had not lost to a WAC opponent at the Pan American Center in more than five years with their last loss coming in January of 2012.
They also had not suffered a home loss in the entire 2016-17 season until the Wolverines came to town.
Utah Valley outscored NMSU 41 to 29 after the game was tied at the half to claim the victory.
NMSU’s chances of winning the WAC regular season title essentially evaporated with the loss as the Aggies fell to 9-3 in WAC play.
Utah Valley entered the game with just three wins in WAC play so far, making the Aggies a heavy favorite.
NMSU has now given up 101 and 84 points in back-to-back games.
Meanwhile, the Aggies only shot 5-27 from downtown and missed 15 free throws (13-28 on the night).
After winning 20 games in a row earlier in the season, the Aggies have now dropped three of their last four.
Ian Baker led the Aggies with 21 points. They’ll try to get back on track against Seattle at home on Saturday night.
