Drivers in west El Paso see another major highway closure Sunday morning

I-10 east closed at 3 a.m. Sunday between Sunland Park Drive and Executive Center Boulevard.

The westbound I-10 on ramp at Sunland Park Drive is also closed while crews work. According to El Paso Police the closure is scheduled to last until 5 a.m. Monday.

Once construction is done, drivers will once again be able to access I-10 east from Paisano.

With all the construction, closures and detours on El Paso roadways traffic can be a headache.

Even though it’s meant to make our commutes flow with more ease, safety is a priority.

The ABC 7 newsroom noticed the confusing closure near eastbound I-10 and Sunland Park Drive, and a lack of signage.

Texas Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer Wright said traffic alert signs are posted around the area.

“Sometimes people get used to those signs, and they stop reading them,” said Wright. “They feel as though they already know it. Suddenly, it pertains to them.”

Wright said Sunday, eastbound drivers will be able to freely steer onto I-10 at Sunland Park..

“They’ll have three wider lanes of traffic than we’ve kept them to during this construction phase, and there will be a small shoulder as well,” said Wright. “So things are going to get a little more roomier little more comfortable.”

Anytime construction crews are at work, Wright said she wants the public to be mindful of their safety and of the crews.

“If you see orange signs, cones, barrels, barricades you’re in a construction zone and you need to pay attention,” said Wright. “You need to slow down, you need to stay alert and expect the unexpected.”

Wright said many fatalities that happen in construction zones are drivers. She said she wants the public to know that moving safety barricades could result into a fine up to $1,000 or two years in jail.
