El Paso High girls soccer team forfeits playoff win vs. Andress

The El Paso High girls soccer team saw its season come to an end, not due to a loss, but due to a rules violation.

The Tigers beat Andress High by a final of 5-1 on Tuesday, sealing their spot in the Sweet 16 of the 5A girls state playoffs.

However, one day later, the team self-reported the fact it fielded an ineligible player for the match vs. Andress. The Tigers had to forfeit the game, bringing their season to a close.

Andress, despite being handed a big loss, now moves on as the replacement for the Tigers in the 5A Sweet 16 on Friday in Wichita Falls.

EPISD officials released the following statement Wednesday night regarding the situation:

“The El Paso High School girls soccer team inadvertently played an ineligible player during the Regional Quarterfinal Game on Tuesday, April 4. Because of this, El Paso High will forfeit the game and the Andress High School girls soccer team will take its place in the playoffs. EPISD Athletics will work with El Paso High to determine the cause of the incident. The school also has already met with parents to inform them of the incident and the plan moving forward.”

The Tigers were originally the only girls team from the El Paso area to make it to the Sweet 16 in any classification.
