UTEP Athletes and Eastwood students garner academic recognition

It is clear UTEP Miner athletics take their studies as seriously as their play on the field because a total of 33 UTEP student-athletes have earned a Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal.

Medals are awarded to C-USA student-athletes who maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better, and 10 different teams had athletes who did just that.

UTEP Women’s soccer led the way with 9 student-athletes boasting a GPA of 3.75 or better, while UTEP softball wasn’t far behind with 5 players. Volleyball, women’s tennis, women’s basketball and football all had three players while men’s basketball track and field included other players on the list.

But other local students who are going above and beyond in the classroom are Eastwood seniors Nathaniel Hibbert and Michael Perez. Both students were accepted into Harvard for the the fall of 2017.

In fact, there was also a record broken at Harvard University, which received over 39,000 apps this season. They accepted 5.2% of that pile, welcoming 2,056 to the Ivy League school.
