YISD seeks feedback on all-boys school

Ysleta Independent School District has launched an online survey for parents and community to gauge sentiment about an all-boys academy.

Results from the survey will be used to help develop programs and curricula.

“We want to build a program around character, discipline to teach young men how women should be treated, how they should engage others, public speaking,” said YISD superintendent Xavier De La Torre. “All of the things that are often times gaps or deficits in the young men that we see in today’s society.”

Teachers and male students at Eastwood Middle School said they were in favor of building a brotherhood to strengthen academics.

“It will definitely keep them with focus issues, and not having so much to worry about grabbing the attention of the girls, ” said history teacher Brenda Joseph. “I think as far as academics, it definitely offers them a rewarding opportunity.”

No campus location has been determined, but the school plans to open for the 2018 – 2019 school year.
