NMSU will no longer hold ‘Tough Enough to Wear Pink’ campaign
After a 10 year run, New Mexico State University will no longer hold ‘Tough Enough to Wear Pink’ campaigns for cancer awareness.
ABC-7 spoke with Pat Sisbarro, the co-chair of Tough Enough to Wear Pink. She says finances are not to blame when it comes to ending the program.
“It’s just time for us to move on and do something else,” Sisbarro told ABC-7. “I think 10 years is an amazing accomplishment for this endeavour and I think it’s time to move on to something else. We’re not quite sure what that will be, but we will be there doing something else. It’s just not going to continue the way it has.”
Sisbarro says volunteers typically start working in January for the events held every October. She says they needed a break. Sisbarro said a lack of funds isn’t the reason for shutting down. She says the organization raised a little over $500,000 last year. NMSU will continue supporting cancer research.
“Donations can still be made to the New Mexico State University foundation,” she said. “They go directly into the endowment which has been fully funded and the money all stays right in Las Cruces in New Mexico and it’s used for cancer research.”
Sisbarro added they set the bar high, and to see it do any less wouldn’t be right. She said it’s possible if another organization wanted to take over, they’d look into it.
