County staff develops road projects to be completed by 2045
County staff has developed future road projects to present to the El Paso Metropolitan Planning Organization to prepare for the city’s growth.
Staff presented its 2045 Metropolitan Transportation Plan to County Commissioners on Monday.
The total cost for the projects is estimated to be about $177 Million. The County is responsible for 20 percent, or about $35 Million. The rest is paid for by the Federal Highway Administration.
“It’s important to get these sorts of projects in the planning phase, so at least it’s going through a process that’s required by the federal government,” Precinct 3 county commissioner Vince Perez said. “The county was never really a big player in transportation, but with all the growth that we’ve seen in the far west and the far east, the county is now forced to build more roads.”
The projects are as follows:
John Hayes Extension (2021-2023) – From Pellicano Dr. to Montwood Dr. (Far East) Tierra Del Este Extenstion (2026 – 2029) – From Pellicano Dr. to Montwood Dr. (Far East) Tom Mayes Extension (2027 – 2030) – Extended to Northwestern Dr. (Northwest) Country Road A (2027 – 2030) – New road that connects to Northwestern Dr. to N. Desert Blvd. (Northwest) Bob Hope Extension (2029 – 2032) – From Loop 375 to Mission Ridge Blvd. (Far East) Darrington Widening (2037 – 2040) – LTV Rd. to I-10 widened to four lanes (Far East)
“Many of the projects we saw today are for the long term. That way, they’re at least in the pipeline for consideration for modeling,” Perez said. “As funding is identified, and if the need continues to grow, then they’ll be transitioned into the shorter term.”
